OTOBONG NKANGA:
CADENCE
MoMA proudly presents Otobong Nkanga: Cadence, a
monumental, site-specific installation by Nigerian-Belgian artist
Otobong Nkanga. The exhibition transforms the Marron Atrium
into an immersive environment featuring sculpture, sound, and
text that reflect ecological cycles and societal transformations.
At the heart of the installation is a large-scale tapestry woven
with innovative digital techniques, fusing abstract forms with
images of water, celestial bodies, and landscapes. Suspended
sculptures, crafted from dyed ropes, glass, and ceramic, interact
with poetic text tablets and a dynamic sound work based
on Nkanga’s voice and breath, creating an immersive sonic
experience.
Exploring themes of censorship, upheaval, and connection,
Cadence presents a sensory journey through materials that
evoke industry, nature, and human emotion. Nkanga's work
embraces turbulence and hope, encouraging viewers to engage
with the shifting rhythms of life.
