Walker’s installation follows major exhibitions in the
Roberts Family Gallery, including Diego Rivera’s Pan
American Unity and JR’s The Chronicles of San Francisco.
The commission marks SFMOMA’s first site-specific project
for the space and will be accompanied by public programs,
discussions, and a publication designed by Pacific studio.
"Kara Walker's Fortuna and the Immortality Garden
(Machine) presents a profound meditation on trauma,
technology, and the cycles of history,” says Christopher
Bedford, Helen and Charles Schwab Director of SFMOMA.
“We are honored to bring this visionary work to our
community in a free and accessible setting.”
A collaboration between Walker and key creative partners,
including technical lead Noah Feehan, design studio
Hypersonic, couturier Gary Graham, and fabrication
company New Project, Fortuna and the Immortality Garden
(Machine) stands as her most ambitious large-scale public
project to date.
