Chicago-based designer Norman Teague (b. 1968) takes
inspiration from historically underrepresented voices,
women, people of color, and non-Western perspectives,
reimagining celebrated design objects using generative AI.
The exhibition features over 45 works, ranging from
furniture and glassware to ceramics and electronics,
alongside 19 original commissions by Teague, including
15 posters and four large-scale 3D prototypes. Legendary
designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Mies van der
Rohe, Eero Saarinen, and Gerrit Rietveld have their iconic
creations reinvented by Teague’s distinct approach.
Building upon MoMA’s Artist’s Choice exhibition tradition,
this marks the first installment of the Designer’s Choice
series, in which contemporary designers curate installations
drawn from the Museum’s collection. Designer’s Choice:
Norman Teague - Jam Sessions is organized by Teague with
Paul Galloway, Collection Specialist in the Department of
Architecture and Design, alongside co-curator Michele Y.
Washington of Norman Teague Design Studios, AI assistance
from Daniel Overbey, and poster design by Narineh Seferian.
“For those who feel excluded from history, we must imagine
new narratives, or create new worlds entirely,” Teague
explains. His vision for this exhibition is rooted in the power
of diverse perspectives and the boundless possibilities
of design. Just like a musical jam session, Teague’s
creative process is built upon collaboration, respect, and
improvisation, reminding viewers of the expansive potential
behind every act of imagination.
